About Mui Ne
Mui Ne Village is located in the Binh Thuan Province in southeast Vietnam. Mui Ne means “point of hiding” or “Hiding Cape” and got its name from the many fishing boats seeking shelter from the strong storms hitting Mui Ne. The main occupation of the 30.000 inhabitants of Mui Ne is still fishing and has been for a long time.
Mui Ne Beach, or Ham Tien is a beautiful tropical beach located near the fishing village. Strong sea breezes makes it a popular spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Over the last couple of years the tourist industry in Mui Ne has blossomed as many foreigners now come to enjoy the culture, the beaches and the great food of southern Vietnam.
Although the tourist industry has had many positive effects on the region, Mui Ne Village still remains poor. The main occupation is fishing, and most women are housewifes. Many of the kids of the fishing village cannot afford to go to public school and are therefore not able to work in the many hotels and restaurants of Ham Tien. Many children grow up in a difficult family environment and need to work from a young age to help support their families.
